You, Me and Dupree

"You" or "Me"

Disappointing

In the Russo brothers' disappointing You, Me and Dupree, Owen Wilson's Dupree expounds an existential philosophy of keeping one's own character, a "ness" tacked on to a first name, such as his best friend's (Matt Dillon) "Carlness." It's a good idea dramatically to remind us all of our uniqueness and the necessity to nurture and protect it from, say, marauding fathers-in-law (in this case Michael Douglas), who might want to efface our individuality as well as get us vasectomies.

Strangers with Candy

Where's David when you need him?

A bit of a stranger to the world of film.

You may decide not to read further as I disclose I watch no television, seemingly making me unqualified to judge Strangers with Candy, a "prequel" to the Comedy Central series starring Amy Sedaris as Jerri Blank, a twisted 47-year-old junkie prostitute. Before you go away, consider that I may be the perfect critic for the task because I come innocent and pure of expectation baggage from that show.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

A pirate's brew.

It still gets the girls and the audience.

"They were a rough lot indeed, as sailors mostly are: being men rooted out of all the kindly parts of life, and condemned to toss together . . . them that had sailed with the pirates and seen things it would be a shame even to speak of . . . ." R.L Stevenson

Wordplay

Arcane, maybe. Interesting, always.

Like foreplay, wordplay such as crossword puzzles can be enjoyed by everyone, but few are truly great at it. In the documentary Wordplay, the gifted geeks of almost acrostics are interviewed, both the wizards who create and the wackos who play. They are under the aegis of the editor of the New York Times crossword, Will Shortz, who oversees the annual competition. (Jon Stewart, an avid puzzler, calls him the "Errol Flynn" of crosswords.)

Cars

Car Talk

We just love our cars.

"I don't even like old cars . . . . I'd rather have a goddam horse. A horse is at least human, for God's sake." J.D. Salinger

Although America's love affair with the auto is currently threatening the country's economic and environmental stability, the creators of Toy Story take us to an imaginative world in which there are no humans to upset balances, just cars grooving to the sounds of competition, love, and family values.

X-Men: The Last Stand

Phoenix Arisin'

Right behind Da Vinci Code for highly entertaining, light summer fare.

By the government's finding the cure for the mutant strain in X-Men: The Last Stand, the death knell has rung for the tripartite series inspired by the comic book series. What more can I say? Society might be considered better if, for instance, there were no "mutant" gays or power hungry politicians, or at least that's what some would say about the mixed blessing. Thus there is no future for this franchise, or not?
