$1.5 Million Trust To Provide Musical Instruments For CCS Students

The Columbus City Schools got a gift this week that will be music to the ears of students for decades to come.

Nanci and David Gobey presented a 50-thousand dollar check to the board last night, to buy musical instruments for students in need.  The money is the first annual installment of a 30-year trust set up by the Columbus Foundation.  Nanci Gobey, a graduate of Pickerington High School said she had to borrow a cello in high school - and return it to the school when she graduated.  Under the terms of the trust, students who meet certain criteria can keep their instruments for ever.  David Gobey said music fosters creativity as well as critical thinking, but the cost and availability prevents many kids from getting involved in school bands and orchestras.  The couple has pledged $1.5 million dollars over the next 30 years, to fund the Gobey Music Trust.

A native of Chicago, naturalized citizen of Cincinnati and resident of Columbus, Alison attended Earlham College and the Ohio State University. She has equal passion for Midwest history, hockey and Slavic poetry.
