State transportation officials believe a section of U.S. Route 33 in Nelsonville is sagging because of abandoned coal mine space beneath the road, and they're trying to pinpoint the problem areas. There are concerns it could lead to a sinkhole north of the Wayne National Forest headquarters. The Ohio Department of Transportation has launched a project to locate voids beneath the road as supports for the old mine roof collapse over time. Records show Ohio has filled four old mines under roadways since 2008.
