Akron Mayor Admits To Inappropriate Behavior With Employee

City of Akron

The recently appointed mayor of Akron says he acted inappropriately with a female city employee when she tried to congratulate him on his new job and he will not seek election to the office this fall as he'd previously announced.

Garry Moneypenny said at a news conference Friday that while hugging the woman, he "turned a goodbye hug into a too-personal encounter" and that he crossed a "professional and personal boundary." He said the woman reported the incident to the city's human resources department and that people were aware of it. Moneypenny, a Democrat who'd been serving as council president, officially became mayor June 1 after Don Plusquellic decided to retire after nearly 28 years in office. Moneypenny says he'll serve the remainder of his term.
