Akron Rejects Adoption of Indigenous People's Day

Akron City Council

Akron City Council last night rejected legislation that would have named the second Monday in October as Inigenous People's Day. The measure from member Russ Neal would have changed the name from Columbus Day.  Supporters say honoring Christopher Columbus is an endorsement of slavery and genocide.  Opponents say the day is about celebrating Italian heritage. Last month, the City of Oberlin became the first in Ohio to rename the Columbus Day holiday.

Jim has been with WCBE since 1996. Before that he worked as a reporter at another Columbus radio station, and for three newspapers in Southwest Florida.
