Arson Suspect Shoots Columbus SWAT Officer

A Columbus police SWAT officer is hospitalized in critical condition after he was shot while police tried to arrest a man on a warrant for aggravated arson. Police say the SWAT officer was in an armored vehicle when the suspect opened fire from inside an apartment on West California Avenue in Clintonville early Sunday, hitting the officer. His identity has not been released. Police say the suspect refused to surrender and at one point smoke and flames were seen in the apartment. 44-year-old Lincoln Rutledge eventually gave up. He is being treated for smoke inhalation and an apparent gunshot wound. Police accuse Rutledge of setting fire to his girlfriend's home on Saturday.
