Bar Association Opposes Sales Tax Expansion

Ohio Governor John Kasich is pushing a broadening of the sales tax base to raise money for a major state income tax cut.Under the plan, legal fees are one of 80 goods and services that will be hit with a 5 percent sales tax. The politically powerful Ohio State Bar Association is opposing the plan. Incoming president Jonathan Hollingsworth says it will increase legal expenses for families and businesses. He tells statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen it could also cause constitutional problems because criminal defendants have a right to legal advice.
