Bill Legalizing Fireworks Stalls

An effort to legalize consumer grade fireworks in Ohio has hit a procedural snag in the legislature. The measure appeared to clear the House Health and Aging Committee, but because the chair adjourned before those voting signed the roll, the bill failed to pass yesterday That means it's going nowhere this year.  Current state law prohibits setting off  recreational fireworks. They can be bought in Ohio, but must be transported out-of-state within 48 hours after purchase. Former Republican Ohio Attorney General Betty Montgomery joined other opponents in testifying against the measure, saying it would increase injuries. Sponsoring State Senator Dave Burke says it would give Ohioans the freedom to celebrate on July 4th.
