Brice Officials Were Warned Not To Create New Traffic Fine System

Recently released documents show the central Ohio village of Brice was warned against creating a new system for collecting money from traffic fines. A Columbus attorney writing an opinion in late 2013 for the village said it lacked the authority to create the system. The attorney said the village should not write civil violations to avoid potential liability or other legal implications. The documents were posted on the Franklin County court website last week as part of a lawsuit filed by the village's former police chief. Brice created the system after lawmakers abolished mayor's courts for some small villages.
