Broken Rail Caused 2012 Train Derailment In Weinland Park Area

WCBE files

The National Transportation Safety Board says a broken rail was the cause of a train derailment near the Ohio State Fairgrounds in 2012. NTSB investigators say a defective rail in a curve of the line between East Eleventh and East Fifth avenues caused the train to jump the tracks. Investigators say the train was not traveling at excessive speed. One person was injured after several explosions and a fire sparked by the derailment. The cars were carrying ethanol, corn syrup and grain. More than 100 residents were evacuated. Local agencies, including the Central Ohio Transit Authority, have billed Norfolk Southern Railroad 900 thousand dollars for damages or cleanup costs. The NTSB estimates damages at 1.2 million dollars.
