Cleveland Cops Cleared Of Criminal Charges In Death Of Tanisha Anderson

Anderson Family via Cleveland Police

A Cuayhoga County grand jury has declined to charge two Cleveland police officers in the death of a mentally ill woman who collapsed while handcuffed and struggling with police in 2014.

37-year-old Tanisha Anderson agreed to accompany officers Scott Aldridge and Bryan Myers after being called to her home, then began struggling. The county coroner ruled the death a homicide, saying Anderson stopped breathing after being placed on her stomach. The coroner also said heart problems and mental illness contributed to her death. The county prosecutor says another medical expert found Anderson's collapse "more consistent with a cardiac event." The City of Cleveland settled a wrongful death lawsuit with Anderson's family for 2.25 million dollars. The family attorney says the public should access court documents to obtain the "real facts." Aldridge and Myers still face the possibility of departmental discipline.
