Coal ash ponds draw fire from environmentalists

Columbus, OH – Federal records show Ohio is among the states that have the most toxic coal ash stored in power plant ponds. It's a practice the federal government has long recognized as a risk to human health and the environment but has left unregulated. Man-made lagoons in 32 states hold millions of tons of ash trapped by equipment designed to reduce air pollution from coal-fired power plants. One of these surface ponds collapsed in December in Tennessee, threatening drinking water. Environmentalists who oppose the construction of new coal-fired power plants are now citing that accident as one reason why. Matt Shafer Powell reports.
