Columbus Photographer, Artist Kojo Kamau Dies At Age 77

Internationally known Columbus photographer KojoKamau died of a heart attack late Sunday afternoon, according to family.  

The graduate of the Columbus of College of Art and Design began taking pictures of Columbus street scenes and famous musicians, artists and other celebrities in the 1950's and 60's.  He worked as a medical photographer at OSU before opening up his own art studio in 1978.   He traveled extensively in Africa, and his work hangs in the Columbus Museum of Art among others.  He joined the faculty at Columbus State Community College in 1997.  In 2014 he collaborated with artist Larry Winston Collins on the artwork for the Long Street Bridge, and was inducted into the Lincoln Theater Walk of Fame. An exhibit of his photographs, as well as art from his personal collection, entitled "Kojo: Eyewitness to History" is currently on display at the National Afro-American Museum & Cultural Center at Wilberforce University.

Funeral arrangements are pending with Diehl-Whitaker.

A native of Chicago, naturalized citizen of Cincinnati and resident of Columbus, Alison attended Earlham College and the Ohio State University. She has equal passion for Midwest history, hockey and Slavic poetry.
