Columbus Police Release Name Of Man Killed By Officers At Port Columbus

Columbus police have identified the knife-wielding man shot and killed by airport police at Port Columbus yesterday as 41-year-old Hashim Hanif Ibn Abdul-Rasheed. Columbus Police Sergeant Rich Weiner says officers were investigating a suspicious vehicle parked illegally in a restricted area outside the terminal, while at the same time airline staff inside were turning away Abdul-Rasheed because he tried to purchase a ticket using a woman's ID. Police say terrorist activity is not suspected to be a motive in the case, but he had a history of mental illness. Police say Abdul-Rasheed spent eleven years under court supervision in Cuyahoga County after he was found not guilty by reason of insanity on attempted murder and other charges. Police say in June of 2000, a judge ordered Abdul-Rasheed to be held in a maximum-security unit at a Dayton psychiatric facility. He was transferred in March of 2001 to another facility. He went to a group home under court order in September of 2002 and then moved to a halfway house a year later. He moved into his own home  in March of 2006 before being released in December of 2012. A multi-agency investigation continues.
