Columbus recreation centers face closure in 2009

Columbus, OH – The City of Columbus says one of the 11 recreation centers slated to close in February will shut its doors this week because early-retirement incentives are taking a toll on staffing. The Recreation and Parks Department says it lost too many employees to keep the Milo-Grogan Center on East Second Avenue open. The city says the early shutdown results in part from a municipal buyout offer that will reduce the impact of layoffs across city departments. City Council still has yet to pass the final budget, but one of the proposals submitted by Mayor Michael Coleman called for closing 11 of 30 public recreation centers. WCBE Intern Casey Best visited some of the centers slated for closure to see what services will be affected.
