Columbus SWAT Officer Shot Sunday Named; Remains In Critical Condition

Columbus Division of Police

Columbus police have identified the SWAT officer shot in a stand off situation Sunday as Steven M. Smith, a 27-year veteran of the division.

He remains in critical condition at Wexner Medical Center.  Smith was injured when police attempted to serve a warrant on 44-year old Lincoln Rutledge, who fired at officers from his W. California Avenue apartment.  Police Chief Kim Jacobs says SWAT officers were involved because of the suspects "erratic behavior" and because he was known to be armed.  Rutledge surrendered to police around 7:30 Sunday morning and remains hospitalized for non-life threatening injuries.  A felonious assualt charge has been added to the original charge of felony arson.
