Committee To Study Giving Columbus Cops Body Cameras

Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman this week appointed a nine-member committee to oversee how to equip 18-hundred officers with body cameras by the end of 2016. The committee led by Safety Director George Speaks will spend up to six months studying the devices.  It will make recommendations on how, when and where officers will use them as well as what video will becomes public. The majority of the committee members work for the city, which estimates it will cost  up to 10 million dollars to buy the equipment and store and maintain the captured footage. Meanwhile, the Akron Police Department is one of 73 nationwide to get the first round of Justice Department grants to pay for body cameras. Columbus is not among them
