Distemper Outbreak Prompts Euthanizations At County Dog Shelter

wikipedia

Officials at the Franklin County Dog Shelter say they had to euthanize more than 50 canines over the weekend after at least one was found to have distemper. Officials say a  prolonged quarantine would've been inhumane since they showed "severe signs of respiratory disease" as well as other physical, mental and emotional issues. Officials say more dogs may also be put down. The remaining dogs will have no contact with other animals and restricted contact with humans for four to six weeks. They won't be available for adoption. Officials are reviewing intake procedures to prevent future outbreaks.
