Security preparations are under way at the Ohio State Fair. As Ohio Public Radio's Andy Chow reports, the highway patrol is adding some new tools to ensure safety for fairgoers.
High-tech metal detectors are up and running on the Ohio State Fairgrounds as safety officials prepare for this year’s festivities.
Along with screenings at every entry… the Ohio State Highway Patrol says another key security measure is to make sure troopers are present throughout the fair.
Lieutenant Anne Ralston, spokesperson for the patrol, says there will be more than 100 troopers on duty at any given time and she hopes fairgoers will utilize those troopers when needed.
Ralston: “If there’s a problem—an issue—an illness—you need help—assistance—there’s a lost child—or you see something that’s just not right—we want you to use that state trooper as a point of contact. We want you to go up there and tell them what you need or what you’ve seen.”
Ralston says there is a heightened sense of awareness this year given the Boston Marathon Bombing in April. So she urges fairgoers to speak up and report any suspicious activity.
New this year will be two sky watch towers. Troopers will be perched at the top of these towers to get a better look at the fairgrounds and survey more space. Ralston hopes this will act as a deterrent for any potential crime, especially possible theft from vehicles.
The 2013 Ohio State Fair is set to open this Wednesday.
