FirstEnergy Says Davis-Besse Is Safe

wikipedia

Akron-based FirstEnergy says cracks in the concrete shield that protects the Davis-Besse nuclear power plant near Toledo have grown since they were first found three years ago. A study commissioned by the company says the cracks could grow between .4 inches and .7 inches during freeze and thaw cycles. FirstEnergy says independent experts have determined the cracks are not a safety hazard and will not compromise the structure.  The hairline cracks were first detected in the shield building in 2011. FirstEnergy determined they were caused by wind-blown moisture seeping into the concrete and freezing. Anti-nuclear groups have said the cracks call into question the soundness of the structure.
