Former State Legislative Candidate Indicted In Text Messaging Case

The Republican who challegnged an incumbent GOP state lawmaker in the May primary by revealing sexual text messages they exchanged has been indicted on criminal charges. 

36-year-old Jocelyn Smith faces charges of extortion and coercion related to her unsuccessful campaign against State Representative Rick Perales. She will be arraigned on July 6. Smith's attorney calls the indictment a witch hunt by the "good-old-boys" network. Smith used a 2015 text exchange with Perales, which he acknowledged, escallating allegations against Perales to include assault, then demanded he resign or see further texts released.
