Freed Inmate Wants To Sue Prosecutors In Richland County

An Ohio man freed after spending 20 years in prison for a murder his attorneys say he didn't commit is now suing those responsible for his conviction. In a federal civil rights lawsuit filed Monday, Glenn Tinney accuses Richland County and its prosecutors of taking advantage of his well-documented mental illness, railroading him into confessing to a crime he didn't commit and withholding evidence of his innocence. Prosecutor James Mayer and county commissioners didn't immediately respond to messages Wednesday. Tinney pleaded guilty to the August 1988 beating death of Ted White in Mansfield in northern Ohio. After the Cincinnati-based Ohio Innocence Project began helping Tinney, a Richland County judge ordered his release from prison, saying his confession didn't support a murder conviction and in fact, suggested that he's not guilty.
