Great Lakes Regional Governments Forming Partnership To Combat Asian Carp

michigan.gov

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder says a partnership with Ohio, other Great Lakes states and a Canadian province is being established to help strengthen defenses against the Asian Carp. The initiative would help pay to upgrade the Brandon Road Lock and Dam in Illinois, a key choke point between the carp-infested Illinois River and Lake Michigan. A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plan would spend 275 million dollars on measures to block the fish from reaching the lakes, including an electric barrier, noisemakers and vessel cleansing devices. Snyder says the partnership will temporarily cover most of the 8 million dollar cost of operating and maintaining the system.
