Highway Memorials To Troops On The Rise

A stretch of state highway west of Cincinnati named for a U.S. Marine killed in Iraq seven years ago is among the latest in a fast-growing number of roadway memorials to Ohio's fallen troops.

The Ohio Department of Transportation says there have been nearly 150 memorial designations since 2007, with more than 50 last year. The dedication of part of state Route 264 as Sgt. David Kreuter Memorial Highway drew an overflow crowd to the Miami Township Community Center. Advocates say the program honors the slain troops and provides a daily reminder of their sacrifice. State officials say the efforts enjoys strong support, with no complaints about the low cost of installing the signs.
