Historic Home Damaged By Fire
State and Mount Vernon fire officials suspect arson is the cause of the early Monday fire that severely damaged the birthplace of Daniel Decatur Emmett, the author of the 1859 song "Dixie.
No injuries are reported out of the fire at the house on South Main Street. The home is owned by the Knox County Historical Society and is part of the National Register of Historic Places. A five thousand dollar reward is being offered for information leading to a conviction.
