House Panel Approves Turnpike Bond Sale

The Ohio House Finance Committee has approved Republican Governor John Kasich's proposal to raise 1.5 billion dollars for state highway projects through Ohio Turnpike bonds.

A floor vote could come today. Minority Democrats unsuccessfully offered a series of amendments putting in writing Kasich's pledges to freeze tolls for short-range trips and to spend 90 percent of the deal's proceeds in northern Ohio. The administration says placing precise spending targets in the law would limit flexibility.
