Sentencing is pending for the husband of Fairfield County's former clerk of courts. 61-year-old David Smalley pleaded guilty yesterday to charges of public corruption and having an unlawful interest in a public contract. His wife, former Republican clerk of court Deborah Smalley, will be sentenced next week on theft in office charges. The two are accused of taking taxpayer money in a shady contract deal and forcing county employees to campaign for the clerk on county time. Both initially pleaded not guilty to multiple charges. Deborah Smalley resigned last December.
