IG Says People Used State Prison Inmate Info To Get Fraudlent Student Loans

ODRC

The Ohio Inspector General says the federal government accepted dozens of fraudulent student aid applications filed using the identities of 62 Ohio prison inmates. 422 thousand dollars was paid to the filers. The IG says the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction failed to follow state policies meant to protect electronic records security. Numerous individuals inside and outside the prisons agency had access to inmates' confidential personal information. The IG wants the agency to respond within two months and recommends it comply with state government policies on data classification and data encryption. The agency says it's developing ways to prevent future problems.
