Judge Blocks New Ohio Law On Traffic Camera Use

Toledo Blade

A judge has temporarily blocked a new state law sharply restricting cities use of traffic enforcement cameras.

Lucas County Judge Dean Mandros on Sunday granted the city of Toledo's request for a temporary injunction. Mandros says his ruling means the status quo remains for now after he found that the city has a high likelihood of success for prevailing on the constitutionality of its system. Columbus, Akron, Dayton and Springfield have also sued to block the law scheduled to take effect Monday. Cities say the law requiring a police officer's presence when photo enforcement is used will make traffic camera use impractical. Toledo won an Ohio Supreme Court ruling in December upholding its camera enforcement system.
