Judge Orders Competency Evaluation Of Treasure Hunter

Associated Press/Delaware County Sheriff's Office

A federal district judge has ordered a mental competency evaluation of the former deep-sea treasure hunter from Columbus who's being held for refusing to answer questions about the location of 500 missing gold coins. The judge last December found Tommy Thompson in contempt of court for violating a plea deal by refusing to respond. The judge wants to know whether a "neurological defect" prevents him from complying with the deal. Thompson has said he told everything he knew during depositions last fall. The coins were recovered from the S.S. America, which sank in a hurricane off the South Carolina coast in 1857.
