Layoffs At Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant Averted

Toledo Blade

Workers cleaning up the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon say the cancellation of hundreds of layoffs does not halt an undercurrent of uncertainty created by the project's unusual funding structure. Congress recently approved extra funding that averts job losses. The current fiscal year ends next fall, and workers anticipate another fight for funding. The project is funded largely through uranium transfers. That creates uncertainty because officials do not know how prices will fluctuate.
