Legislature Insists On Wright Brothers Primacy In Flight

Ohio Historical Society

Supporters of Dayton's Wright Brothers are applauding an Ohio resolution defending the famous aviators' place in history as the first in flight.

Amanda Wright Lane, the great-grandniece of Wilbur and Orville Wright, turned out at an Ohio House committee today, bringing a photograph of the Wrights' famous flight and pieces of wood from their Wright Flyer that traveled with fellow Ohioan Neil Armstrong to the moon and back.  The Ohio resolution is the latest salvo in an ongoing battle with Conneticut.  In 2013, that state's legislature claimed Gustave Whitehead took the first powered flight in Connecticut in 1901, beating the Wrights' flight off Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, by two years. Most aviation historians disagree.  The National Aviation Heritage Alliance's director said a national aviation heritage area and two national parks depend on the Wrights' accomplishment. Resolutions have no legal weight.
