Local Study: Number Of Child Injuries And Deaths From Window Blind Cords Unacceptable

fairwarning.org

Researchers at Children's Hospital in Columbus are calling for the elimination of accessible cords on window blinds because of an unacceptable rate of child injuries and deaths. Doctor Gary Smith is the senior author of the study which examined children under the age of six during a 25-year period ending in 2015.  Smith says nearly 17 thousand kids were injured during that period.

New standards will go into effect next year, but Smith says they're not strong enough to completely eliminate the risks.  The study is published in the journal "Pediatrics."

Jim has been with WCBE since 1996. Before that he worked as a reporter at another Columbus radio station, and for three newspapers in Southwest Florida.
