Schools, nonprofits and other organizations are holding service projects today in honor of Doctor Martin Luther King Junior. Since 1994, this national holiday has also been a national day of service to honor King's message of nonviolence and social justice. Stephanie Sparrow Hughes with Hands On Central Ohio says volunteers are working on projects around the state learning about the blessings in their own lives and understanding King's legacy.
Ohio State University's Office of Student Life and the group Pay it Forward conduct and annual service project. Spokesperson Louisa Wruck says the goal is to send one thousand students to volunteer at over 50 organizations.
Other holiday observances in Ohio today include marches, peace walks, panel discussions, lectures and blood drives.
