ODNR Investigations Reintroducing Sturgeon To Lake Erie

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is looking into whether it can reintroduce breeding populations of sturgeon to Lake Erie. Sturgeon were once plentiful but thought to be all but gone from Lake Erie less than two decades ago. Now officials say they get 15 to 20 reports a year of sturgeon in Lake Erie. Chris Vandergoot is a fisheries biologist supervisor with the natural resources department's research station in Sandusky. He says there is a movement to reintroduce sturgeon into the Great Lakes as water quality improves. Lake sturgeon are covered with bony plates, weigh up to 200 pounds and often called "living fossils."
