Officer Cleared In July Slaying

Dec 21, 2012

A Grand Jury has cleared of criminal charges the Columbus police officer who shot and killed a man who reported a burglary at his home last July.

Officer William Kaufman killed 21-year-old Destin Thomas during a confrontation outside of a Brook Boulevard home. Police say Thomas was armed. 19-year-old David O'Neal was later arrested and charged with breaking into the home, which police say ultimately led to Thomas' death. The Columbus Police firearms review board continues to review the shooting.
