Ohio Drug Overdose Deaths Set Record In 2014

The Ohio Department of Health says a record number of Ohioans died from drug overdoses last year. The state says nearly 23 hundred people died from overdoses in 2014, an 18 percent increase over the previous year. Abuse of the painkiller fentanyl, which is often combined with heroin, is a significant contributor to the increase. Fentanyl was involved in 502 deaths last year, up from  84 the previous year.  Nearly 12 hundred of last year's deaths are related to heroin, up from nearly one thousand in 2013.  Fatal drug overdoses remain the leading cause of accidental death in Ohio.
