The National Insurance Crime Bureau says Ohio leads the nation in claims due to metal thefts.
The industry group says more than 32 hundred claims were filed in Ohio from 2010 through 2012, 23 percent more than second-place Texas. The group says the figures do not necessarily mean there are more metal thefts in Ohio, only that businesses and homeowners filed more claims. Metal theft has been increasing across the country. Thieves have stripped sheets of metal from rooftops, ripped apart air conditioners for the copper coils and stolen cemetery decorations. The pieces are then sold for scrap.
