Ohio Prison To Lay Off 185 Workers After Losing Contract

The operator of a private prison in northeast Ohio says 185 employees are expected to lose their jobs because the government decided not to renew the facility's contract to house federal inmates.

The Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown is expected to remain open because it has several years left on a contract with the U.S. Marshals Service to house hundreds of people in custody. CCA officials previously said they would consider other contracts and hoped to keep many of the facility's 400-plus employees. A notice provided to the state and Youngstown's mayor says 185 layoffs are expected at the prison at the end of May as the federal contract expires and staffing is reduced. The letter says officials anticipate those layoffs will be permanent.
