wkyc.com

The Ohio Highway Patrol has identified the man who was shot by a suspect at an I-71 rest area in Delaware County on Sunday. 18-year-old College of Wooster student Alexander Melchert remains hospitalized in critical condition. Troopers say 25-year-old Shawn Johnson fired several shots at a vehicle and Melchert was struck and injured. Troopers say Johnson later drove his vehicle over road spikes and crashed into a guardrail in Richland County following a chase. Johnson then shot and killed himself. Patrol Sergeant Vincent Shirey says the shooting of Melchert appears to be random.

Court documents show a domestic violence arrest warrant was issued for Johnson two days earlier after he allegedly attacked his mother.
