Operators Of Six Scrap Yards Face Prosecution Over Illegal Purchases

Franklin County prosecutors say grave markers, beer kegs, copper wire and tons of shredded plastic have been recovered in an investigation into illegal scrap yard activities. Jim Letizia reports.

Arraignments are scheduled for February 19 for the operators of six scrap yards indicted on a host of charges. They are New World Recycling, PSC Metals, Masser Metals & Recycling, G-Cor, Sims Brothers Recycling, and A to Z Recycling. Prosecutors say at one of the yards, 56 grave markets, 87 beer kegs, 409 storage bins and 7,800 pounds of shredded plastic were recovered. Also found during the sting launched in January 2014 were stolen copper and aluminum wire.  Detectives launched the sting by trying to sell metal that appeared to be stolen at 19 area scrap yards. Those yards are not allowed to purchase materials from people on a police list of known thieves.

Jim has been with WCBE since 1996. Before that he worked as a reporter at another Columbus radio station, and for three newspapers in Southwest Florida.
