Plastic Bag Reduction And Recycling Program Begins This Weekend

Wikimedia Commons

A campaign to reduce the number of plastic bags being dumped in the Franklin County Landfill begins on Saturday.
Jim Letizia reports.

The Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio is teaming up with more than 60 local retailers to offer locations for people to return their plastic shopping bags. More than 100 collection bins will be available at the sites where the retailers do business. The program also encourages people to shop with reusable bags. SWACO also says central Ohioans should not place their plastic bags in their household curbside recycling bins, because they often get stuck in sorting equipment, which damages the machinery. SWACO says central Ohioans discard millions of plastic bags each year. The landfill is nearing capacity, and officials hope the program will help extend its life. The program is called “Bring Me Back”. More information is available on the Solid Waste Authorities website - SWACO.org.
