Prisoner Suicide Results In Lawsuit

A prisoners' rights group has sued a former prison doctor charging he violated the civil rights of an inmate who committed suicide after allegedly being denied pain medication.  The Ohio Justice and Policy Center filed the federal lawsuit against Dr. Myron Shank and other former and current prisons officials on behalf of inmate Greg Stamper. The lawsuit alleges violation of rights including freedom from cruel and unusual punishment.    The lawsuit says Stamper, who hanged himself in 2011 at Allen Correctional Institution in Lima, suffered severe pain from a nerve condition and Shank refused him pain medications.   Shank was put on administrative leave after the suicide and later resigned. The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections says it does not comment on active lawsuits.
