Prosecutor Gets Threats In Tamir Rice Case

The FBI and local law enforcement agencies are investigating threats made against the Cuayhoga County prosecutor who oversaw the investigation that resulted in a grand jury decision not to indict two white police officers in the fatal shooting of Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old African-American boy killed in 2014 while carrying a pellet gun. Prosecutor Tim McGinty has received a number of threats since the December 28 decision, according to his spokespersn. County Sheriff's deputies and Cleveland police have been providing security. An FBI spokesperson wouldn't comment about threatening fliers posted around the neighborhood where McGinty lives. McGinty said after the grand jury decision there was "indisputable" evidence Rice was reaching for the pellet gun tucked in his waistband when he was shot. The Rice family and some members of the black community have criticized McGinty's handling of the case, saying it was tilted in favor of police. The Cleveland chapter of the NAACP is set to go to court next week to attempt to obtain transcripts of the grand jury proceedings after McGinty refused to release them. And a meeting between McGinty and a group of faith leaders and community activists is scheduled to take place later this month.
