A cellphone video of a violent arrest by white Columbus police officers of a black man in early September prompted more than two-dozen people to stage a protest at last night's Columbus City Council meeting.
The video shows 31-year-old Timothy Davis being arrested September 1st at a store on East Livingston Avenue. Police say there were several warrants for his arrest. The video shows officers punching and kicking Davis and using profanities against him while trying to handcuff him. Officers tried to confiscate the video, but the person who recorded it refused to comply. One officer said he deployed a taser several times but it was "ineffective." Tammy Fournier-Alsaada of the activist group called the People's Justice Project demanded a swift investigation.
And community activist Kenny Brown wants the probe to be open.
Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs says the division has been investigating the incident since it happened, but says a week is not enough time to complete it.
This isn't the first time Davis has been in legal trouble. Last September, he was charged with assaulting a Columbus officer. In March, he was charged with assaulting a Kentucky officer following a high-speed chase.
