The use of public transportation is up in Ohio and around the country.
American Public Transportation Association President Mike Melaniphy says Columbus and Cleveland are helping lead the way. The Central Ohio Transit Authority says bus ridership increased by 3 percent last year to more than 19.3 million trips, a 28-year high. Ridership rose by nearly 3 percent in Cleveland in the fourth quarter of last year as compared with the previous three months. Melaniphy credits more options like bike- and car-shraring, redeveloped downtown areas and an improved job market.

Many cities have light rail transit systems as well. Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman has said such a system is needed here.
