Raising Radon Awareness

This is National Radon Action Month. Radon-related lung cancer claims the lives of an estimated 20 thousand Americans every year. That's why the Ohio Department of Health is encouraging home owners and renters to test for the gas. The department's senior health physicist, Donna Jordan, says radon is a byproduct of uranium, and is found in the oil and rocks under and around the foundations of buildings.

Test kits range in price from 10 to 30 dollars, and can be purchased at a local hardware store or online. Jordan says where radon is detected, a mitigation system costing between 8 hundred and 12 hundred dollars is extremely effective.

Radon can't be seen, tasted or smelled. More information on test kits and licensed mitigation experts is available at the Ohio Department of Health website.
