Results Of Second Buckeye Lake Dam Study Being Released Today

The deteriorating dam at Buckeye Lake and related safety concerns will be the focus of an annual gathering arranged by the local chamber of commerce today. The Full Pool Breakfast typically marks the start of the lake's high season. But this year, the state significantly lowered the water to winter levels after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers warned the nearly 180-year-old dam is at risk of catastrophic failure. The chamber sought an independent analysis, which is expected to be discussed at the breakfast. The results show water levels could be raised by five feet, one foot below normal, to ease concerns about loss of boating, fishing and other tourism activities. The state plans to build a new dam, with construction starting next summer.
