Smart Columbus is offering taxi cab companies 30 thousand dollars in rebates to add electric vehicles to their fleets.
Jim Letizia reports.
Officials say in a news release the goal is to educate the public about and accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles, as well as capture data on their usage. The money comes out of the city's ten million dollar award from Paul G. Allen Philanthropies. Ten rebates worth 3 thousand dollars each are now available. The deadline to apply is June 29. Applications are available on the Smart Columbus website. Rebates will be awarded based on demonstrating recipients will maximize miles driven, trips taken and the number of passengers per trip. Smart Columbus expects to offer rebates for an additional 30 vehicles in October. Also this fall, the organization will team up with the Columbus College of Art and Design to make wraps for public electric vehicle charging stations.
