State Building Standards Board Opposes Security Barricade Devices

The Ohio Board of Building Standards is opposing the installation of barricade devices on doors in the event of an active shooter in a building. The board says many of the devices require specialized skills to install and then several steps to remove from a door to allow people to leave a room. The board's strongly worded conclusions come weeks after a new state law pushed by schools and manufacturers went into effect prohibiting the state fire code from banning such devices. Board spokesperson Michael Duchesne says work on the report began before the law was changed, and the board will now adopt new rules to comply.
